Poker is a game that puts an individual’s analytical, mathematical and interpersonal skills to the test. It is also a game that indirectly teaches several important life lessons, including the importance of discipline and focus.
During a poker hand the dealer deals one or more cards face up to the table and each player then places chips into the pot based on the rules of the specific poker variant being played. The first player to place his or her chips into the pot has the privilege or obligation (depending on the specific rules) of making the first bet in each betting interval.
After the pre-flop and flop betting rounds are complete the dealer deals three more cards face up to the table that everyone still in the hand can use to form a poker hand. These are community cards and they are called the turn and river.
When you have a premium opening poker card, like a pair of Kings or Queens, you should bet aggressively. Doing so will make other players think twice about calling your bluffs and they’ll be more likely to fold. If you’re holding a weak hand, like a pair of 7s or 6s, then you should just call and hope that you get lucky on the flop. By doing this you’ll save your money for the stronger hands that you have later in the hand.
